My Take

This is the smoked meat sandwich in the Townships. At least that’s what I think, and so do several industry folks and locals I’ve spoken to. You go for smoked meat, you drink a beer, and you don’t complicate the assignment. Every sandwich is cut to order and it’s exceptionally good. I took my mother—who loves smoked meat—about six months ago, and she still hasn’t stopped talking about it. My personal ranking is very simple: if you want smoked meat in the Townships, Taverne Alexandre first, then Chez Paul.

Public Knowledge

La Tribune reported in 2024 that brothers Matthew and Peter Cassar (owners of Sherbrooke's Louis restaurants) bought the tavern in late 2021, and that manager Christian Fréchette kept the classic recipes and suppliers while adding a chicken sandwich, shrimp, upgraded pizzas, a smoked-meat chili and more beers (La Tribune). Smoked meat is the signature: the tavern promotes it alongside a European-style hot dog and old-fashioned pizza, all from local suppliers (Taverne Alexandre), and La Tribune says it now sells smoked meat by the pound and at Phœnix hockey games at the Palais des sports Léopold-Drolet (La Tribune). Its few Tripadvisor reviews, mostly from 2015–2017, praise the smoked meat and friendly, long-serving staff, while noting a limited lunch menu and crowds at noon (Tripadvisor).
